What Is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a government-backed advanced driving course designed for drivers who have recently passed their test. It covers six modules that go beyond the standard test syllabus — giving you the skills and experience to drive safely in a wider range of conditions and environments.
Andy Dixon is a fully qualified Pass Plus registered instructor and has delivered the programme to many newly qualified drivers in Bournemouth and Poole.
The Six Pass Plus Modules
- Town driving — dealing with busy urban roads, pedestrians, and junctions with confidence
- All-weather driving — driving safely in rain, fog, ice, and reduced visibility
- Out-of-town driving — rural roads, single tracks, and country lanes
- Night driving — managing reduced visibility, dazzle, and hazard perception at night
- Dual carriageways — overtaking, lane discipline, and joining at speed
- Motorway driving — motorway rules, smart motorways, and high-speed hazard awareness
Will Pass Plus Reduce My Insurance?
Many insurers offer premium discounts to drivers who hold a Pass Plus certificate, as it demonstrates a higher standard of driving skill and safety awareness. The size of the discount varies by insurer, so it is worth shopping around with your certificate in hand. Some drivers find the saving covers the cost of the course itself.
You can find a list of participating insurers on the gov.uk Pass Plus page.
A smarter driver from day one
Pass Plus is not just about insurance — it genuinely makes you a more capable and confident driver. The skills learned in the programme stay with you for life.
How Long Does Pass Plus Take?
The course typically takes a minimum of six hours, spread across the six modules. It can be completed in a single day or spread across multiple sessions — whatever works best for you. There is no test at the end; your instructor assesses you throughout the course and signs off your certificate on completion.
Who Can Do Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is open to any driver who has recently passed their practical driving test. There is no upper time limit on when you can complete it, but it is most beneficial in the year or two after passing when you are still building independent driving experience.
